1897 $1 MS66 Deep Mirror Prooflike PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint's Morgan dollar mintage dropped in 1897 to just over 2.8 million pieces -- still a large number of coins, but nowhere near other Philadelphia silver dollar mintages from the late 1890s until 1899's minuscule output. In general, the 1897 coins were extremely well produced, with sharp strikes and great eye appeal. Many coins went into storage and sufficient quantities survived the Pittman Act melts to satisfy today's collectors. Deep Mirror Prooflike examples are much scarcer, especially at the Premium Gem level. This brilliant example is sharply struck and boldly contrasted. PCGS reports only three such pieces at the MS66 Deep Mirror Prooflike level and none finer, while NGC has certified a single example in 66 and none finer (6/23). We expect much competition from Deep Mirror Prooflike specialists when this compelling lot crosses the block.
