Morgan Dollars
1896-O $1 MS64 PCGS. The 1896-O is a better date in Uncirculated grades, despite a mintage of 4.9 million coins. The contrast with circulated pieces, which are plentiful, is due to most examples of the 1896-O being released into circulation at the time of issue, or later melted after the Pittman Act of 1918. Few bag quantities of the issue were distributed in the mid-20th century, making the issue scarce for modern collectors.
The current coin displays brilliant luster that is more vibrant than usual for a New Orleans dollar of the mid-1890s. Strike sharpness is also above average. Minor marks on Liberty's cheek and in the adjacent field determine the numeric grade. Examples of this issue are rarely seen finer. Population: 32 in 64, 3 finer (7/23). From The Stuard Collection of Morgan Dollars.
